Folding cross

Cross encolpion, 13th century

A small cross was found during excavations at the Tustan Fortress. On the obverse was the crucifix of Jesus Christ, and on the reverse was the image of the Virgin Oranta. The relics of saints or particles of consecrated communion bread were placed in the space between the valves. It dates from the 12th – 13th centuries.
